They were not struck dead because they did not give, but because they lied about how much the land had been sold for in order to pull back from their commitment to donate all the proceeds of the land. The early Church did a lot of resource sharing, selling possessions and distributing them among friends and family to insure that there was no lack among them.

I don't believe we should be required to give. On most occasions I don't because I don't trust my church leaders (long story). However, isn't there a story in the Acts where two people were struck dead for lying about their tithe. They were required to give 10% or something. Was his name Ananias (sp)? That name comes to mind for some reason.
