PURPOSE

By K. Martinez
This is a question that we have all asked ourselves. What is my purpose? Here are some of my thoughts on this subject.

All of us have asked God what our purpose is. We normally think about this specifically to our personal purpose. Am I suppose to be a pastor, be part of a missionary, feed the hungry or just be involved in the church ministries? We want to feel that we have meaning in life. It's very personal to us. We want to make sure that we are not out of the will of God so we want to find that one thing that we feel God has called us to. I thought about this many times. When I was involved in ministry work in the church I always wondered if that was God's purpose for me. Now that I am no longer in church ministry I have often wondered if I am doing enough. Come to think about it I  felt like that even when I was in ministry. Strange huh.

For us to get the most out of life we need to pursue that direction of purpose. Our life gives us important roles in every day life that give us opportunity to fulfill purpose like our families, friends, work, hobbies and school. These are areas that give us purpose but what about biblical purpose? How do we incorporate that in our every day life? Is it separate or does it have to braid together? I definitely think that it has to all come together. We need to not only tell our families and friends the things of God but live it also. When opportunities in our jobs and schools come we should be encouraging and showing people the love of Christ. But is that it? (Seems pretty comfortable to me). I know this because I have been there. Recently I noticed that I'm pretty comfortable not knowing what my true purpose was. At first I wondered if it was because I was no longer going to church consistently. But then I remembered that I felt like that even when I was in church. So what is it?

This is what I believe; I believe we all have gifts that God has given to us to use to encourage and help each other and to use them as life brings us opportunities. I believe first and foremost our purpose begins in our home; to train our family in the ways that they should go. (Prov. 22:6) It has to start there. The Bible tells us many things that are required of us which, in my opinion, is part of God's purpose for all of us individually. In Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus gives a list of things that is part of our purpose. There are many scriptures in the New Testament that talk about 'works'. What are those 'works'? Works are part of our purpose. Our gifts are what we use for our purpose. I read an article that said 'your biblical purpose declares the reason you exist and reflects the heart of God'. It also clarifies what is non-negotiable in life. I didn't want to put a whole bunch of scriptures with what I felt was examples of our purpose but I do believe that we can all find many things in the Bible that show us God's purpose in our lives. I don't believe that specific people are 'called' to be a preacher or teacher. I think we are all 'called' to do the things of God and if we have the Holy Spirit in us stirring up His gifts than God will use us to do the things that we normally would not think we are called to do. Maybe we make it more complicated than what it should be. What I mean is that I feel that doing the purpose of God is harder than knowing the purpose of God. I definitely know that I have some work to do. Your comments are welcomed. If you want to send some scriptures about purpose you can do that also.
