Always Pressing Forward

By K. Martinez
Many times our past keeps us in bondage. It's not until we let go our past that we truly can move forward and make our journey easier.

Philippians 3:13 My Brothers, I do not count myself to have taken possession, but one thing I do know, forgetting the things behind and reaching forward to things before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Jesus Christ.

Leading up to this comment Paul addresses how he use to follow the law and actually persecute the church. He also comments how everything that was gain to him was now considered 'dung' to him for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus. There are a couple of points that I would like to make.

Paul makes the point of leaving our past behind and moving forward with our walk. Sometimes we allow what has happened in our past to keep us from our future. Normally we struggle with the bad things from our past. We allow those bad things to hinder our relationship with God. We allow the hurt that we've caused or the hurt that has been done to us prevent us to from moving forward. This probably is due to some unforgiveness in our lives. Whether forgiving ourselves or others. Either way we are still in bondage and must let those things go. 2Corinthians 5:17 shows us that if we are in Christ everything that is old has passed away and all things become new.

What I would like to point out is that this would also include even the good things that we have done. We have to let go even the good things we have done in the past. These could be harder to let go because it gives us a sense of worth. We like to reminisce on what we've done in the past. Now I'm not saying that we shouldn't talk about the things that God has done through us and for us. That is part of glorifying God and it part of our testimony. But we need to make sure that we are not stuck on those things. God has much more greater things that he needs from us so we need to make sure that we keep it moving. Always try to press forward because it never allows you to be idle long. Sometime we get tired and need rest. That's ok as long as you don't rest too long. Remember this race is a marathon not a sprint so pace yourself and press forward.
