Purpose (Part Two)

Here are more thoughts I have on purpose and some Biblical things that God has required of us.
In my last article I described some of my thoughts on Biblical purpose and what that may be. I shared how I felt that we are all given gifts and that God uses those gifts to fulfill His purpose for us. I think we spend too much time trying to figure out what out purpose is especially since we can just look it up in God's word. If we look to follow those things than there's nothing to figure out. I feel that our purpose should always begin with the foundation of the commandments that Jesus himself gave us. Let's take a look:

Matthew 22: 37- 40 talks about loving the Lord with all your heart, soul and mind. It follows by saying that we should love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Pretty simple. This scripture is the foundation of our purpose but as simple as it sounds it can be the hardest thing to accomplish. That scripture is very wide and includes so many other things that are required of us. 1 Col. 10:31 says that whatever we do we should do it to the glory of God. 1Thes. 5:11 talks about edifying (lifting) and comforting each other. John 4:23 says that we should worship him in spirit and in truth. Luke 6:27-28 mentions to love our enemies and do good to the one who hate you. Also to bless those who curse you and pray for those who use you. Luke 6:36-38 says not to judge or condemn but be merciful and forgiving. Wow, those Luke scriptures can sometimes be tough ones to fulfill. Luke 9:23-26 - Jesus tells his disciples that if any man wants to follow him they must deny themselves and take up his cross daily because to lose your life for him would be to gain life. If you try to save your life you will lose it. He also says that if you are ashamed of Him than He will be ashamed of you. Lastly, in Matthew 25 Jesus requires us to use and increase what He has given us (parable of the talents), give food for the hungry, drink for the thirsty, clothing for the naked and visit the sick.

Now there are also some things that Jesus spoke directly to his disciples about that we should not ignore as being part of His purpose for us. Like in Matthew 4:19 when He said to Peter and Andrew to follow him so that he can make them fisher of men. In Matthew 28:19 Jesus told the disciples to go and teach all nations what He has taught them and to baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. It seems that all the disciples knew what there purpose was. These are just a few and there are many more. Please feel free to add to this list.

I have come to the conclusion that our purpose is anything that God has commanded or required of us. In 1 Corin 13:13 Paul says "And now faith, hope and charity(love) is what we have but the greatest of these is charity(love)." This, for me, is our purpose and it's what I will always try to pursue. Now I'm sure that there is are scriptures in the New Testament where God had a specific purpose (beside Jesus) for a particular person. Please feel free to respond with those so they can be posted. I really would be interested in those. God Bless.
