Webster's Dictionary defines happiness/happy as a state of well being and contentment; having or marked by an atmosphere of good fellowship. Happiness is an attitude, not a condition. I believe that our thoughts do affect how we feel. For example: There have been times I've felt down and unhappy for a number of different reasons, but if I speak to my husband or a friend about it along with their encouragement I begin to feel a lot better. The following scripture shows this example: Philemon 1:7 Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints. (NIV) The situation is not so big any more. I, at that point, make a decision to change my attitude. However, if I continue to ponder and wallow in negative situations I will continue in my unhappy attitude.
I have been around people who have no financial, health, marital or family issues yet seem unfulfilled and unhappy, something is missing in their life. I have myself been and seen others on the flip side of that with all kinds of problems in their life yet seem happy and fulfilled. Why is that?
I believe that our relationships especially with God help to adjust our emotions and attitudes. Our faith plays a big part at this point. Ultimately God is in control and our faith in that helps us lead a life filled with more happiness even through trials. James 1:2- My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials (NKJV) Our ultimate goal is to pursue a life of obedience to God and in that is when true happiness will come. 1Peter 1:2 - who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.(NIV)
You see, although it's not always as easy as it sounds it is the pursuit of our relationships, especially with God, that will help us find fulfillment and TRUE HAPPINESS!!
